Saturday brings two great science activity choices for us: what to do. . .what to do...
Tomorrow, Ridgewood High School in North Jersey celebrates the 22nd year of celebrating scientific endeavors with Super Science Saturday. We attended last year and enjoyed our morning checking out the experiments, environmental discoveries and cool examples of scientific technology. The kiddo liked seeing the device the fire department uses to see heat sources in the dark, and looking through a telescope to see planets and corona of the sun. He also liked watching the flour, cornstarch and water mixtures "dancing" on the big speakers as music played (you may also have seen this experiement on The Big Bang Theory). Most of the crowd stuck around to see the model rockets launch on the football field afterward, and the kids all run around the field to catch (or fetch) the model rockets when they come back down to earth. It was FREE to attend, although I vaguely remember some booths accepting donations or having info available if you wanted to send in donations to their programs.
Li'l Boo is also excited at the opportunity to return to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York to see a new exhibit called Lizards & Snakes Alive! featuring 60 live lizards and snakes from five continents, which opens March 6th. I think this is one exhibit my hubby will have to accompany the kiddo through as although I am a big advocate of curiosity, exploration and respect for nature, I still wrestle with my own fear of snakes. I remember hen I was eight months pregnant with Li'l Boo, we decided to hike to Lizard Rock near Camarillo and Thousand Oaks, CA. I was actually leading the way up the path when a snake crossed the path in front of me about three or four feet ahead, stopped, hissed, then continued on his path. I, on the other hand chose to flee the hike (a mere 20 or so feet from the end) and hightailed it back to the car to wait for my hubby and great uncle. I remember being on the lookout for mountain lions the whole hike, but the snake threw me. Of course we were in its natural habitat, but I wasn't thinking about 'em and it surprised me just the same. I've had trouble standing in snake exhibits or areas at zoos, etc. ever since. They give me the heebie jeebies. The hint at bright-colored exotic sqaummates does sound intriguing, and hey - we know I'm not planning any trips for LI'l Boo to check these lizards and snakes out in person in their own habitats around the world, so it's a contender for us tomorrow.
Be sure to leave a comment and let me know if you'll be attending either of these. We'd love to say "hello!" and hear the highlights from the exhibits that you enjoy most.
