The Avengers released yesterday, September 25th on Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray 3D and DVD, bringing together Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Captain America in a battle to save the earth from Loki, Thor’s brother from Asgard.
What happens when you put some of the greatest superheroes together in one film? You get one of the highest-grossing movies of all time (#3 in fact). Put those same heroes on Blu-ray? You have an amazing theatrical experience in the comfort of your own living room that involves both your TV and your iPad.
Not only is the video quality just amazing in Blu-ray, but if you’re a fan of Marvel characters, the combo pack brings together great extras starting with the Marvel Second Screen App that you can download for free on iTunes. The Second Screen pulls together exclusive content including character profiles on all the heroes, and clips on the Marvel heroes that you can browse at your leisure.
However, the coolest part is the ability to synchronize the
app to the movie while it’s playing. Every couple of seconds a new photo, trivia fact,
quiz, movie or behind-the-scenes clip appears on your iPad, perfectly synced with the appropriate
place that you’re watching. If you’ve watched the movie a couple of times
and don’t need to be glued to the action taking place on your big screen, the
app is a clever companion.
You can see the artist's rendering of how the scene was envisioned below on the iPad, and the actual scene on your TV...
Trivia about the movie along with bios appear throughout the movie...
Comic book covers dating back decades ago...
In addition to all the content through the app, there’s a
whole slew of extras on the DVD and Blu-Ray like a gag reel, deleted scenes, audio commentary, exclusive on assembling the ultimate team, Soundgarden's music video for "Live to Rise"and more.
Check out Avengers on Facebook for the latest and greatest.
I received a review copy of The Avengers on Blu-Ray for the purpose of trying out the extras and Second Screen app.
Lastly, do you like that snazzy TV above? It's the Samsung ES8000 and they're sponsoring my blog for the next two months. Look for more info on that soon!

It’s nice to hear that there’s a lot of extras; I’ve heard this movie was a technical achievement so I’d like to check out the behind the scenes. I’m kind of embarrassed to admit this, but I still haven’t seen The Avengers (I’m probably the only one). It got pretty tough to avoid spoilers when all my coworkers at DISH would start talking about it. Now I’m kind of tempted to buy it, but I’ve been disappointed with movies I’ve bought without seeing them first a few too many times, so I think I’ll hold off. Besides it’s already in my Blockbuster @Home queue, so I’ll be getting the Blu-Ray in the mail shortly. If I like it, then I probably will buy it, and in that case since I pay a flat monthly rate to rent movies and video games, I won’t be paying a couple of bucks to one of those kiosks to rent it and then paying for a Blu-Ray.
