I recently attended a press preview for the 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show and am happy to report that I was so impressed with the family and kids programming that we're heading to Philadelphia in March to check it out for ourselves! This year's theme for the Flower Show is “Hawaii: Islands of Aloha,” and will take place March 4-11 2012 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
The preview totally had me wanting to book airfare to visit Hawaii again - all of the bright, bold colors and unique flowers (orchids, anyone?) - but of course, my favorite Hawaiian flowers are Tropical Birds of Paradise.
So why attend The Flower Show with a kindergartner? The show actually offers a variety of opportunities kids to partake in the fun of gardening and engaging natural design. (Ever see a volcano made entirely of flowers like the ones below?)
There are activities for toddlers through teens with scavenger hunts, hands-on planting, flower arranging, Hawaii-inspired arts and crafts, and earth-loving activities in the all-new Einstein Healthcare Network Family Lounge powered by Sprout TV. I got to meet Sean and Chica at the Flower Show preview in NYC. :-)
There's a special Family Lounge where kids can play games and watch videos,or just have a seat for a few minutes. (Children must be accompanied by adults.) It's open each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. One major attraction for families will be character appearances from Universal Pictures’ “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” on Sundays, March 4 and 11, from 2-5 p.m. There will also be a reading of the book by Dr. Seuss on those Sundays at 2 p.m. by local celebrities.
A designated "Family Day" is planned for Sunday, March 11th at the Flower Show. The day will offer a range of activities and events for the little ones, including family-friendly lectures and demos, arts and crafts, and the unique experience to meet some of their favorite TV characters from Sprout TV and Universal Studios.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is offering a Family Fun Pak which includes two adult tickets, two child tickets and a one-year membership with PHS, all for $70. Advance tickets are available online at www.theflowershow.com.
Proceeds from the Flower Show benefit the year-round work of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and this year will support City Harvest, the innovative program that brings together a network of urban farmers, provides green job training, and grows fresh produce for more than 1,000 families in need each week.
