Fancy Nancy the Musical premiered at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre on the Upper West Side of NYC this weekend, opening the Vital Theatre Company's 2012-2013 season of family programming. I was delighted to have been invited to attend the purple carpet press opening and see the show for myself!
I even borrowed a fancy li'l friend, Little C, to join me for the experience. . .
There were pink feather boas and butterfly headbands inside to get even more fancy for the hour-long performance. Little C was mesmerized by the cast as the curtain rose and Fancy Nancy and her friends Bree, Rhonda, Wanda and Lionel started things off with an extra fancy song.
The show is based on the book, Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet. It's about the friends performing in their first show, "Deep Sea Dances," and how they cope with getting the parts they want - or in Fancy Nancy's case, how she can be fancy even when she doesn't get the role she wants. It was a delightful kid-friendly show - an intimate theater, creative and funny songs, lots of fancy props (there's a tea party in one act!), and a little audience participation.
We were fortunate to even have the opportunity to meet and get an autograph from Fancy Nancy book series author Jane O'Connor after the show.
Fancy Nancy the Musical will run through November 12, 2012 on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with special holiday performances on October 8th, November 6th and 12th. Visit www.vitaltheatre.org for tickets.
