I admittedly have many weaknesses, and running is one of them. I can swim, circuit train, dance, play tennis, basketball, baseball - even Zumba for gosh sakes! - for minutes or hours on end . . . but running? Not so much.
I could never get the breathing down. Yes, I could run a mile in under 10 minutes (6:58 is my PB from YEARS ago), but it hurts my throat and lungs. Not my feet, knees or hips, but my lungs and throat. Because of this, I never saw the point in running for the joy of running. Running to get somewhere or from something? Yes. But running just to run? No, thank you. Not enjoyable. There are few things that have the potential to get me excited about running. One thing that never fails is watching, cheering and supporting other runners in long distance races. Last year, it involved cheering on Nicole Feliciano in the ING New York City Marathon. Or reading about Amy Oztan's experience as media running the Disney Princess Half Marathon. This year, I've been following Melissa Skabich's journey to the ING NYC Marathon with her husband, raising money for The American Cancer Society.
Before the kiddo was born, we flew from San Francisco to Chicago just to cheer my sisters on in a marathon, and had a blast. (Granted, we were cheering on ALL of the runners because we never even saw my sisters between the start and finish lines. Oops.;-))
So brace yourselves for this. Without further ado, I'm announcing that I've registered to complete my first HALF MARATHON!!!
Yes, that's worth shouting.
Why now? There's actually several reasons. But the primary one? My sisters are going to run the Disney Princess Half Marathon in Orlando, Florida in February 2013 with me. As in, three sisters from across the country will be running this TOGETHER. If I'm ever going to do it, getting to run with my runner sisters at the Happiest Place on Earth is what sold it for me.
The fact that it's an "easier" course (mostly flat), with lots of photo opps through the parks, and that there's a lot of beginners that run the race, and that it's mostly all women, that it's in Florida in February - all weighed in on my decision.
I'm totally excited and completely scared at the same time. What have I gotten myself into?
Are you thinking about running the Disney Princess Half Marathon in 2013? Are you already registered? Would love your advice, and to share our experiences! :-)
Thank you to Samsung for sponsoring Coast to Coast Mom as part of their #FamiliesInMotion initiative. Read about our experience thus far with the Samsung ES8000 SMART TV and watch what we do with it the next two months!
I'm super excited to run this half with my sisters!!! This is a first for us girls to run a race together and I cannot wait! I have never been to Disney so I am all sorts of fired up for that as well:)
