Calling all LEGO lovers!! LEGO brick-building inspiration abounds at The Art of the Brick exhibition in New York City at Discovery Times Square. The epic artwork display by renowned contemporary artist and New York native, Nathan Sawaya, is sure to inspire everyone to rush home and start building with their LEGOs.
C2CDad had the opportunity to meet Nathan yesterday, as he gave us a personal walking tour of the exhibit. Hearing in person the stories behind each one of his creations really brought to life these truly fantastic pieces (when you visit you'll see plaques that explain the inspiration and number of bricks behind the artwork, so don't worry). The detail is truly amazing, particularly as you get up close and start to comprehend the thousands of LEGO bricks and hours put behind each creation.
The exhibit is the world's biggest and most elaborate display of LEGO art ever, with more than 100 works of art made out of millions of little LEGO bricks. Nathan's creations and interpretations go beyond primitive stacking towers and follow-the-direction sets that you'll find in your local toy store.
One of my favorites was a 20-foot-long T-Rex dinosaur skeleton made entirely out of LEGO bricks. . .
. . . and a classic American Museum of Natural History figure, created entirely out of LEGOs!
This was a crowd favorite, and one of Nathan's most famous creations, Yellow:
Here's the artist, Nathan Sawaya himself!
I really like these two figures:
There's some terrific art history pieces created out of LEGOs, and fantastic human figures too. There's really something for everyone in the family. (A li'l Andy Warhol or baseball anyone?) And in case Art of the Brick leaves you itching to build before you get home, there's an opportunity to add your own brick to Nathan Sawaya's future artwork . . .
The Art of the Brick will show at Discovery Times Square through January 5, 2014. So don't worry if you can't squeeze a visit in this summer - start planning your holiday season visit!
