This year marks the 80th birthday of Campbell's Condensed Chicken Noodle Soup. This is noteworthy for our family, not only because we've been slurping a lot of chicken noodle soup this super snowy winter, but also because Andy Warhol and his iconic Campbell's soup art series were among the first pieces of artwork that the Kiddo learned to identify.
We were blessed with a fantastic preschool experience that exposed the kids to a dozen famous artists, and every time we saw a Campbell's soup can for months (years?) afterward, he'd talk about Andy Warhol. (Yes, at four years old!) It's been noted that Andy Warhol found the inspiration to paint his "Campbell's Soup Cans" series because that's what he had for lunch every day for 20 years.
These past few months working with Campbell's Condensed Soup, I've learned a few bits of trivia that have led to some interesting discussions over our chicken noodle soup:
- Each can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup contains 32 feet of noodles. That's a lot of noodles.
- Today, Chicken Noodle is the top-selling soup for Campbell, with sales of more than 250 million cans a year. Here are the Kiddo's favorite varieties right now:

In case you were wondering about the history of the condensed chicken noodle soup, it was introduced in 1934 as "chicken with noodles, " and sold only moderately well. A few months after it's release, an innocent misstatement on a popular radio show caused sales to skyrocket. One of the radio personalities misread his copy and called it "chicken noodle soup." Campbell started receiving large orders for their "new" soup then, and the name was officially changed to Chicken Noodle. :-)
